A Coast Guard patrol boat intercepted 10 people suspected of entering the United States illegally on a small vessel east of San Clemente Island on Friday, the service said in a statement.

According to the Coast Guard, a boarding team from the 87-foot Marine Protector-class cutter Haddock spotted a suspicious 20-foot cuddy cabin vessel at 3:28 p.m. about 27 miles east of the island, which lies off the Southern California coast. Crew members launched a boarding team to investigate and approached the boat, gaining the occupants’ compliance without using force, officials said.

The boarding team identified 10 people aboard who all claimed Mexican nationality, the Coast Guard said. The individuals were detained and later transferred to U.S. Border Patrol agents at Ballast Point in San Diego for further processing, according to the statement.
