WASHINGTON — U.S. News & World Report magazine recently published its 2026-2027 Best Global Universities rankings, putting the University of California Irvine as the 99th best school in the world.
UCI’s Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences program is its top-performing subject in the rankings, coming in as #10 globally. Education and Educational Research ranks #28 in the world, and Geosciences ranks #20 globally.

China’s dominance
China’s dominance in the 2026–27 U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings reflects a long-term, state-driven push to turn its campuses into strategic engines of scientific power, backed by massive public investment in research funding, laboratories and talent recruitment that now rivals or exceeds many Western systems.
Flagship policies like the “Double First-Class” initiative, built on earlier 211 and 985 projects, funnel resources into a select group of universities and disciplines, tie promotions and bonuses to publishing in high-impact international journals, and reward citation-heavy STEM output — exactly the kinds of metrics favored by global rankings.
This helps explain why Chinese institutions have surged in publication volume, citation impact and international reputation even as U.S. and European competitors face tighter funding and political headwinds.
Meteorology and Geosciences at UCI
UC Irvine has emerged as a major hub for meteorology and atmospheric sciences through its Department of Earth System Science and allied research units, which study how the atmosphere interacts with oceans, land and the biosphere to drive climate, air quality and extreme weather. The university offers Earth and Atmospheric Sciences coursework and a minor designed for students in the physical, natural and engineering sciences, giving undergraduates exposure to topics such as Earth’s atmosphere, atmospheric chemistry, and climate-change science alongside computational modeling and field research. U.S. News & World Report has published its annual “Best Colleges” rankings since 1983, with the first national listings appearing in 1983, and over four decades they’ve evolved into the most widely cited and commercially successful college guide in the U.S., helping to normalize the idea that complex institutions can be reduced to a single ordinal list. It is the longest-running and most influential institutional ranking in the country.
In its most recent editions, the publication ranks nearly 1,500 universities and colleges, evaluating them on factors including graduation rates, social mobility, and graduate earning potential. The rankings carry real weight — a 2011 study found that a single one-rank improvement led to a 0.9% increase in applicants, and research has shown a lasting effect on college applications and admissions, particularly among students in the top 10% of their graduating class.
Built on a shifting formula that has historically mixed reputation surveys of college leaders with metrics like test scores, graduation rates, and alumni giving, the rankings have drawn sustained criticism for methodological tinkering, rewarding selectivity and wealth, and creating incentives for data-gaming rather than genuine educational improvement.
The rankings aren’t without controversy. Critics argue they rely on self-reported and sometimes fraudulent data, encourage gamesmanship by institutions looking to game their scores, and contribute to admissions frenzy by placing undue emphasis on prestige over individual fit.
Despite that, multiple studies show that simply moving into or up within marquee tiers (such as the top 25 or top 50 national universities) is associated with measurable bumps in applications and a stronger applicant pool, while slipping a few spots can mean fewer applications, underscoring the rankings’ outsized influence on both institutional behavior and student decision-making.
